The Stitch: Transforming Downtown Atlanta with New Green Space
The Stitch project is a transformative urban initiative aimed at capping a section of the I-75/I-85 Connector in Downtown Atlanta to create a sprawling 14-acre green space. The project seeks to reconnect neighborhoods that were divided when the interstate was built, adding new life to the downtown area. Phase one, set to begin in 2026, will introduce a 4.5-acre park between Peachtree and Courtland Streets, featuring amenities like an amphitheater, skate park, and event spaces.
Community involvement has played a significant role, with thousands of residents contributing feedback on desired features, which include more green space and recreational areas. In addition to providing a recreational oasis in the urban core, The Stitch aims to foster affordable housing and improve transportation options as part of a broader effort to address past planning decisions that adversely affected local communities.
Slated for completion by 2036, The Stitch will not only reshape the cityscape but also prioritize equity and connectivity. Future public walking tours will help keep the community engaged and informed as the project unfolds, offering an opportunity for residents to stay involved in shaping the area’s revitalization.
